what's in a name?

ever have one of those days, where you're just sittin' 'round, thinkin' 'bout stuff? and somethin' pops in your head that you're wonderin' 'bout? that's what happened to me today. i was wonderin' how all the fine felines i've been meetin' thru our blogs got our names. some are easy, like i think i how how ghost got her name. and oreo, i mean unless there's some real bizarre hidden story there, i think i have that one figured out. but what about mia? or Wm of Mass Destruction. or Timmothy Dickens. or Scooby? i'll tell my story if you'll all tell yours.....

when i got 'dopted, i was real young and tiny. the 'doption lady told my Mom that they found me and my sister and brother in a tire in a field and that my catMom was no where to be seen. she also said ii was a girl, which Mom was glad 'bout 'cause they didn't want a boy kitty ever again 'cause of some "spraying" stuff that gone on in the past. so the Mom took me home. they decided to name me Edina, after a woman on an English tv show called Absolutely Fabulous. her nickname was Eddie. a week later, when i had a vet dr. appointment, everyone realized i was not a girl (geez, it was pretty obvious, there). panic set in. what would my name be??? that night was Dream Cruise, a big old car thingy we have here every year. they were standin' on the side of the road, watchin' all these cool old cars and what drove by??? a real pretty pink Edsel. and that's how I got my name! and now, in my Mom's office, she has four little Edsel cars, a couple of Edsel signs, it's kinda cool. of course it's kind of weird to be named after the biggest auto failure known to man.....

Neat story but we don't understand how they could mistake such a handsome fellow for a girl. Here's our stories...

Mia used to live with some people who had little girls who liked soccer so when they got a poodie - they named her after Mia Hamm the soccer player. Mom's sister rescued Mia after her family moved and left her (how dare them!) and Mom decided to keep Mia as her name.

Ghost's name came about because Mom's family was suggesting names for her new white kitty. Mom didn't like Snowy or Cloud cause they didn't fit so when Casper was suggested Mom had brain storm and came up with Ghost which fit perfectly!

I don't really know how I got my name. The younger Human brought me home from some friends of his, and they had already named me, but I don't remember it at all. The People decided not to rename me so I wouldn't be confused. Plus, the Woman likes the name Max.

Cool name stories fellow poodies. Here is how we got ours:

Kinsey kitten picked out Shadow at the Humane Society and she already was named by the people who gave her away so Kinsey kept the name because Shadow is gray with a little white.

Mom picked out me, Merlin, and was told I was a girl. But she couldn't find a name that fit really for a solid black female so when she found out I was a boy, she loved the name Merlin and said it fit my colour and my personality.

Ko Ko is named after a siamese cat that Mom reads about in a series of mysteries even though he is Tunkinese and not Siamese. He looks like a chocolate siamese just a little darker in colouring so Mom named him Kao Ko Kung, Ko Ko for short.

Edsel, you are such a cool poodin!

Our mom had this nice boyfriend and he named us Black and Tan, because it sounded like beer, ha. We are Black and Tan, but we are not beer. So the nice boyfriend is gone, mom still e-mails him, but we go by Blackie and Tannie Man. We are brothers!

Miss S got her name because that same boyfriend to told mom that she was a boy--he called her Simba--like Disney the Lion King. After mom caught her, she was a wild little abandoned kitten in our alley way, we found out she was a girl. So mom calls her Miss S! She nips on our toes when we least expect it!

Can you tell this boyfriend had never had cats...we loved him and now he has his own kitty...it adopted him by laying on his Lexus car every morning--he named it Lexy Kitty. Lexy sleeps on his head & is an indoor kitty now.

Mom put you on our blogroll.

Mia, Mia, we were named after the SAME Mia!! I thought it was cool that we had the same name but it's too cool that we were named after the same person! My bean dad named me after Mia Hamm once he saw my skills with the mylar ball.

Hi Edsel!
We don't know ho we got our Scooby & Shaggy names since we lived with another family before we came here. But we figure it has something to do with that cartoon. And Shaggy fits his name. Scout is named after the girl in "To Kill a Mockingbird". Mom & Dad watched that movie right before he came to live with us and it seems to fit him. So we all have "S" names!

Mom reads those "Cat Who" stories too!

miss kitty, i've never seen Gunsmoke but my Mom used to watch it and she likes the story of how you got your name.

Scooby, Shaggy and Scout, it's cool that you all have "S" names.

Blackie and Tannie Man is a cool story too.

When mom and dad went to the shelter looking for a kitten, they had already been tossing out names for kittens. And when I picked them to be my mom and dad, they said "He just looks like a Jasper Cat." The Mc part of name came from my parent's last name, and kitten just goes with cat- so Jasper McKitten-Cat is my given name.

When mom and dad found Josie and Huggy Bear and their brother and sister, they named them Jasmine (now Josie- b/c they had been told she was the only girl), Bullet (now Huggy -- b/c he was sooo fast; he could be half way across the apt before mom and dad could catch them), Frisky (self-explanatory) and Curly(b/c she had a really curly belly). But after Curly and Frisky were adopted out mom and dad kept Josie and Huggy Bear. Mom and dad wanted a "J" name to go along with my name and they did think she looked like a Jasamine. So her given name is Josie the Pussycat McKitten-Cat. And Huggy Bear got his name b/c mom said his face made him look like a little black bear. So they went a little retro and his name is Huggy Bear McKitten-Cat.

Now Maggie has the best name story. When mom and dad took in the litter of 10 kittens, they had to give them all names that would help identify them (Spot on nose, baby face, spotted belly, paw, eyes, etc) b/c they were having to give them mouth meds and eye meds, they didn't want to medicate one twice and miss one. Well as you know maggie's eyes were really infected so they called her Eyes. Well dad didn't like that so he started calling her Magnum (Magnum PI...playing off the I). Then they found out she was a girl so she went to Maggie. And her given name is Magnolia (Maggie) McKitten-Cat.

Sorry that was soo long!!

Mom was going to name me Milo after that movie star kitty. Now this is embarassing, when she came to pick me up from my foster beans who rescued me, she called me "her little Puff". She says I look like a kitty in a book she had in school like a bazillion years ago.

So I humor her, even though I'd rather be called the Puffinator.

I was rescued by Mom’s Grammy, Popi and Niece Emi. I had another name but Mom said it just didn’t fit my personality, I agree. The people who were not very nice to me gave me that name. She said I would find my true name when I was ready, so one day while mom was taking a nap I found the crust to a slice of pizza she’d had for lunch. I was chomping on it (it was very tasty) and mom said I reminded her of an Italian movie star called Sophia Loren. She is a resplendent brunette like me, she is a diva like me, and she like Italian food like me. So that’s how I found my name. The fluffies posted on our blog where their names came from, you can find it here - http://divakitty.blogspot.com/2005/06/whats-in-name.html

I'm sorry Edsel. I didn't mean to sound ugly on my blog. That was NEVER my intention. Since only my archive page is with Blogger and the rest of the site is something else I didn't think I could put it in as Blogger. I greatly apologize to you and everyone else. Please forgive me!

Well, we don't have any cool stories about our names because we're the ones who told our mom what our true and secret names were. Except for Olivia, of course. She was too sick when she came to us to tell Mom her true and secret name, and she had to be called something when Mom took her to the cat fix-it place. Mom came up with Olivia and the name just stuck.

I got the Mass Destruction part just because!

Edsel,
ACTUALLY, there is a neat story... :) Mom had just picked me up at the "place where I was before" & her & her ex were joking about calling me Oreo & all of a sudden an Oreo Cookie commecial came on the radio! No joke! So she figured I was meant to be Oreo.

way cool. actually, Oreo cookies are one of my Mom's absolute fa'vrite cookies ever. she hardly ever buys 'em 'cause when she does she wants to EATTHEMALLATONCE.

That's a cool story Ed. Here's how I got my name.

My Mommy does thinking or maybe not thinking things called meditations. And since Chloe the Elder Cat had gone to Kitty Heaven, Mommy wanted a new kitty cuz she was lonely without a kitty, so she did some meditations bout a good kitty name. And the meditations told her to get a kitty and name it Sangeeta. That's a India girl's name. I dunno why a 'merican kitty would need a India name, but that's what the meditations told her. So she started looking for a black kitty (like Chloe the Elder Kitty) that fit the name Sangeeta. Well when I was in the cardboard box those people who rescued me kept me in, I saw Mommy come look in the box and I said for her to take me home. I climbed up on her and she took me home. But I was real little tiny and Mommy couldn't tell if I was a boy kitty or a girl kitty. So she figured she'd better make a short word for Sangeeta that'd work either way. And meditations said Sanjee was an ok way to do it. So I got to be named Sanjee! Course later Mommy found out I was a girl so Sangeeta woulda been ok but I wasn't gonna give up my special name by then! So I'm a Sanjee. :)

My sisters got their names cuz they were so skinny when they got 'doped. Boni is short for Boni Maroni like that song "I got a girl named Boni Maroni, she's as skinny as a stick of macaroni." When Mini came along later she was even skinnier! So she got the name Skinny Mini. Now she gets called Mini the Moocher cuz she's always takin stuff. Specially food!

Edsel, the bean at the shelter thought I was a girl too!! Sheesh!!! Anyway, when I camed home, I didn't have any name at all. So Gramma and Momma wanted to find a fitting name. They decided to look through a list of names and what they meant. Timothy means "honoring God" and well, that's kinda what Momma and Gramma wanted to do when they got me...honor God by taking care of me :) The Dickens part came from my "silly antics" as Momma calls them. She says I am a little dickens...So, Timothy Dickens it is!

6:36 PM
Blogger Edsel/The Pooch said...

cool Timmy, i knew about the "honoring god" part from your blog, but not about the Dickens. that's a way cool way to look at it - by lovin' and takin' care of a little poodin (which is fun all by itself anyways!) it's also honoring God. cool, i like that!

Ohhhhhhhhhh sorry Edsel, I won't call you that other name no more. Thankies for telling me!!! I won't tell Boni about the macaroni thing neither. :)
